Momoyama Series
Unlike Ukiyoe of Edo Period (1603-1867), portrait painting in Momoyama Period
(1573-1603) were more dynamic and liberal than those of Ukiyoe woodblock prints
as represented by Hiroshige, Hokusai, etc.
mainly because it was the most turbulent times in Japanese history without no
strict control by a strong government, thus marking
Momoyama Period as Japanese Renaissance. Ishizumi fan chose those
dynamic, energetic and active portrait designs and named those as Momoyama
Series.
